Legends & Sagas: Discovering the True Soul of Places
Have you ever driven through a foggy gorge or stood in front of a rugged cliff, feeling as though the silence itself was telling a story? As a full-time vanlifer, my travels across the world have taught me one fundamental thing: a place is far more than its map coordinates or the beauty of its panorama.
Travelling in a campervan exposes you to countless landscapes. Yet I firmly believe you haven’t truly experienced a region until you know its ancient legends and sagas. Anything else is merely “passing through.”
Why Legends Are the Key to Culture
Legends are the echo of the past. They are the way our ancestors tried to make sense of the inexplicable—the raw force of nature, fate, or the human soul. When we set out to uncover these stories, our perspective on our surroundings shifts completely:
Understanding Landscapes: A mountain is no longer just a geological elevation, but perhaps a petrified giant or the throne of a god.
Experiencing Culture: Sagas reveal what matters to the locals—their fears, their hopes, and their sense of humor.
Deep Connection: Only by learning the myths do you truly connect with the ground beneath your van.
On the Trail of Myths: Life in the Van
My campervan—my faithful companion—is not just a home on wheels, but a mobile archive of world history. As a vanlifer, I am constantly searching for what lies beneath the surface. Whether it is the White Lady at the harbor of Auray, the petrified armies of Carnac, or the secret poison compartments of the Medici in the châteaux of the Loire—every region guards its own secrets.
Traveling in a van gives me the time and flexibility to stay right where these stories come alive. I park at the edge of megalithic fields, spend the night near ruins, and listen to the wind whistling through ancient walls. Often, it is encounters with locals or subtle architectural details that point me toward the next legend.
Authenticity Over Fairy Tales
You won’t find made-up stories on this site. My goal is to collect authentic, locally documented legends.
When I write about the Dragon of Meung-sur-Loire or the Silent Bells of Saint-Gildas, centuries of faith and folklore lie behind them. It is the search for truth, often hidden beneath the mantle of the fantastic.
